It’s hard to believe 10 years ago I packed up my life in Nebraska and moved to Nashville. During these 10 years I have moved 5 times from various apartments, townhomes and houses and I know where I am at now will not be my last move.
Like many others, I moved during peak moving time which is between April and September, which we are just in the beginning stages of peak prime time so I wanted to offer a few suggestions to those of you who may be finding yourself in the position of needing to move in to a new home.
Hire a Moving Company
After moving so many times and trying to think about the future of homeownership, I know I will have to move again. Luckily, moving doesn’t have to be stressful or hard on your body. That is why it is important to reach out to a great moving company for help, like Moving Solutions.
Moving companies, like Moving Solutions, can help you move locally AND help you pack up your prized possessions. I don’t know about you but I hate packing and I like making things easier so this sounds like a win-win to me! Even if you are not planning a residential move, they also help with long distance moving in Nashville and college moving as well.
Your life is busy enough as is, let Moving Solutions take the packing and moving off your plate.
Out With The Old, In With The New
If you choose to pack your own belongings, this is a great time to go through your items and throw out things that no longer serve a purpose to you. Donate your clothes to Goodwill, sell your items on places like Poshmark, Ebay, and Facebook Marketplace. Doing so will allow you to get rid of items you no longer want and put cash back in your pocket to spend on your new home. It will also be one less thing you will have to worry about moving from point A to point B.
Organize, Organize, Organize!
- Label your boxes, that way you and/or your moving company will know where boxes will go.
- Don’t over pack a box, nobody wants to have boxes rip and have a mess because of a broken box.
- Don’t pack last minute – start packing little by little, 1-2 hours a day. Take on one room at a time if that helps.
- Pack an essentials bag – clothes, chargers, medications, toiletries, shower curtains, toilet paper… think as if you were going on vacation so you have clothes and essentials while you are unpacking.
Don’t Procrastinate…UPDATE!
Updating your address is really easy. Just update/forward your mail by filling out information on the Unite States Postal Service web site. This is the first place to start when changing your address but more than just your mail will need to be updated. Be sure to call your bank, phone provider, cable/internet, Gas, electric, subscriptions, doctor offices, veterinarians, Insurance, family and friends. Updating your address with any necessary providers, services, family will keep things as seamless as possible. No one wants to track down and reorder missing Amazon packages.
Remember Your Pets’ Needs
Of course moving to a new place can be exciting, especially if a pet is going from an apartment with no yard to a home with more room for all the zoomies. It can also be very stressful for your four-legged friend(s).
Be sure to introduce your pet to your new home slowly. If possible, find a puppy sitter during your move so that they don’t worry or get scared with all the chaos and commotion of carrying out boxes to and from. The last thing you want to do is have a scared pet try to escape and run off.
When it is time to relocate your pet, let them ride in the car with you and be sure to let them out first thing when you arrive to the new home. Plan to let them explore and smell all the new smells when they get out. Depending on how much your anxiety your pet has, introduce them to your home slowly, one room at a time. Show them where their bowls are and of course toys.
Before you know it they will know they are safe with you and will have a new space to explore just like you.
If you have an upcoming move, work smarter not harder and hire the professionals to do the job and do the job right. You will find peace in knowing that your items are in the good hands of moving professionals. You will be glad that you did!
Best wishes to you on your move and enjoy your new home!
